Sara Meets Taichi Sword

Review of the Wulong 32 Sword Workshop presented by Professor Lily Sun on 19 October 2025

Hmmmm learning a totally new 'weapon'?!!!!

That was my first reaction when the Wulong 32 Sword workshop was announced. I did not like the idea of holding a 'sharp' object and brandishing it around. Besides, can I even hold the sword in one hand long enough to learn/complete the 3 to 4 minute routine. There were countless doubts going through my mind.

The day of the workshop arrived and I found myself looking forward to it though my apprehension did not subside.  I ariced early and found myself surrounded with faces filled with enthusiasm. The atmosphere was filled with an unspeakable calm amidst the chaos of finalising permits and being fitted with the right sword etc.

Once the teaching started, I was totally absorbed by Laoshi Lily Sun, who specialised in the sword as part of her wushu training in China. Having absolute command of the sword, she walked us through each movement while explaining and demonstrating simultaneously. Her patience and stamina exhibited for the next 4 hours left me in awe.

Slowly, I began to understand how the sword movements relate to our taichi practise in class. I can see grace and yet strength in Laoshi's moves applying the principles of  taichi, and not merely muscles. I felt myself gaining another level of understanding of taichi. What an ingenious combination taichi is. Health, strength, mind and spirit all activated at the same time.

In conclusion, learning and memorising the sword 32 routine is possible on your own. However, to truly master it, requires not only clear verbal/visual instructions but guidance from a true master with both good taichi and sword skills combination which itself is rare in Melbourne.
