Learning the art of the sword
On 19 October 2025, students eagerly gathered for our much-anticipated 32 Sword Workshop. The day was a celebration of uplifting improvement through tai chi sword techniques and the 32 Sword form, bringing students energy and focus to the art of the sword.
Ranging from beginners looking to experience tai chi sword for the first time, to seasoned taichi sword practitioners refining their technique, students had come from across greater Melbourne and Victoria. Professor Lily Sun provided an inclusive atmosphere encouraging all participants to challenge themselves, regardless of experience level.
Led by a genuine master of the sword
Students were inspired and grateful to receive instruction and guidance from Professor Lily, a former Chinese national champion, plus an international competition level coach and judge. With all her expertise on show, Professor Lily skilfully guided students through the principles, techniques and movements of the 32 Sword, breaking down each movement with clear instruction and practical demonstration.
Superior training techniques ensured correct foundation and technique as the practical applications of each movement were taught, not just simply the basic movements.
Professor Lily praised students for their dedication to improving their tai chi skills withher specialty weapon – taichi sword – in particular.
“The sword is my technical speciality, which I studied since I’m 6 years old. I am very proud to share my skills with Wulong and students of tai chi” she said, “Seeing students using t he correct foundation techniques and completing the sword 32 movements with confidence and enthusiasm is a wonderful result.”
“Practicing with the taichi sword provides excellent physical and mental health benefits. It increases ability in all the foundations of taichi, particularly balance and posture. It develops focus and spatial awareness, strength, coordination, and fitness. It strengthens the arms and wrist and improves energy coordination throughout the whole body.”
Students’ were overwhelmingly positive
“Once the teaching started, I was totally absorbed by Laoshi Lily Sun” said Sara L. “Having absolute command of the sword, she walked us through each movement whilst explaining and demonstrating simultaneously. the patience and stamina exhibited for the next 4 hours left me in awe.”
