Taichi promotes health & fitness in older adults

Taichi is an effective, enjoyable, and inexpensive form of exercise intervention for supporting and maintaining physical and mental health.

A 2022 study reported in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine summarised current knowledge about the effectiveness of taichi for older adults with a range of general health outcomes.

The authors reported that practicing taichi can significantly

  • improve strength, balance, cardiorespiratory fitness, cognition, mobility, body awareness, and sleep

  • reduce the incidence of falls and nonfatal stroke, and

  • decrease stroke risk factors.

They concluded with a high level of certainty that health care providers can recommend taichi for promoting health and improvement of overall well-being of older adults.
