Taichi has benefits for chronic kidney disease, China 2022

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a severe global health issue, characterized by a substantial mortality and morbidity burden. Chronic kidney disease afflicts approximate 500 million adults aged 20 years and above all over the world, nearly half of them accompanied by moderate or severe impairments in renal functions in 2010.

A 2022 Chinese study undertook a systematic review of the benefits of taichi for chronic kidney disease patients. The objective of this research was to identify the effects of taichi exercises on psychological and physiological benefits in patients with CKD. Long-term Taichi exercises can improve quality of life, cardiorespiratory fitness, and physical motor function for the end-stage renal disease (ERSD) patients undergoing dialysis. Regular Taichi exercises might exert modest influences in delaying CKD progression for mild–moderate CKD patients.

The key features of Taichi are composed of mindfulness, imagery, structured alignment, flexibility and relaxation, strength and balance, natural breathing, social support, and integration of body, mind and spirit. More than 500 studies and 120 systematic reviews have tested the effectiveness of Taichi on the rehabilitation of the chronic diseases of coronary heart disease, arthritis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Results show that regular Taichi exercises generated quality of life benefits for end-stage renal disease patients, improved patients’ satisfaction, mental health, role-emotional , and/or psycho spiritual satisfaction.

In conclusion, Taichi can benefit end-stage renal disease patients. Regular Taichi exercise, could modestly improve the quality of life, cardiovascular functions, and exercise capability. Taichi might play a certain role in reversal renal function of CKD at the mild–moderate stages, yet sufficient evidence was required to strengthen this argument.
