Qigong supports physical & mental health

Researchers from Yantai University in China found health qigong an ideal exercise method to promote the physical and mental health of young and middle-aged people.

Shoulder, neck, and back discomforts and abdominal obesity caused by sedentariness are increasingly prominent in young and middle-aged population groups. This study explored health qigong intervention’s effects on the cervical vertebra, lumbar vertebra, and mental state.

Health qigong is a low-intensity aerobic exercise mainly composed of isometric contraction actions without external weights or rapid uncontrolled actions and is appropriate for sedentary people. Alternating health qigong routines were practiced three times per week for 12 weeks including Ba Duan Jin (Eight Section Exercises), Yi Jin Jing (Tendon Muscle Strengthening Exercises), Wu Qin Xi (Five Animals) and Liu Zi Jue (Six Healing Sounds). These are some of the core health qigong learnt and practiced in Wulong classes.

After health qigong exercises, sedentary people felt substantial improvements for movement of cervical and lumbar joints and body composition. The negative moods of teachers and students, such as anxiety and depression, are also remarkably relieved. Health qigong can effectively increase physical and mental health, is not limited by venue or equipment, and it is easy to participate.
