Qigong alleviates the side-effects of cancer treatment

A 2021 paper from Fayetteville State University, Louisiana, USA and published in the Biomedical Journal of Scientific & Technical Research, reports on studies where qigong practice has been used to reduce or alleviate the adverse side-effects that result from surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatments for cancer. The researchers found clear evidence that the practice of qigong can aid in alleviating the negative effects of cancer treatment and can improve patient health in several ways.

Qigong have been used to treat a wide variety of illnesses. In recent decades they have also been employed to alleviate or reduce the adverse side-effects of chemotherapy and other western medical treatments for cancer and other diseases. The researchers reported thousands of medical studies have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of these treatments on a wide range of illnesses.

The paper reported that qigong exercise can often reduce fatigue, insomnia, breathlessness, numbness, heartburn, dizziness, psychological distress, cognitive impairment, heart rate variability, recovery time, nausea, pain, discomfort, anxiety and depression, and can increase bone density, self-efficacy, muscular strength, immune function, longevity, ambulatory stability, joint flexibility, and the overall quality of life.

The researchers found the most popular set of exercises recommended by practitioners is likely to be Baduanjin, which consists of eight exercises that stimulate all the major meridians. It is one of the qigong sets that is recommended by the Chinese Health Qigong Association.

Other qigong sets recommended by the Chinese Health Qigong Association and mentioned by the researcher include Liu Zi Jue, Wu Qin Xi, Yi Jin Jing, Da Wu, Shi Er Duan Jin, Daoyin Yangsheng Gong Shi Er Fa, Mawangdui and Taiji Yangsheng Zhang.

Wulong incorporates qigong, particularly the recommended Chinese Health Qigong Association routines mentioned above into all classes.
