Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu in Yunnan: A Journey Through Paradise

A Traveller’s persective by Wulong Student Vicky H

Thirty four Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu students recently spent fourteen days travelling in the Yunnan Province in China. The tour organised by Professor Lily, provided an amazing insight into a diverse and beautiful part of China.

From the magnificent mountains in Tibet to the sub tropical south east Asian border, the Yunnan Province scenery was breathtaking, vast and home to a number of ethnic minority groups who continue to practise their cultural traditions. The trip had so many highlights including the Leaping Tiger Gorge, the Stone Forest, Lugo Lake, temples, historical towns as well as nightlife for those with energy at the end of the day.

The tour also used local guides when travelling and this gave us a great insight into local life and customs and even taught us a Chinese song to sing on the bus! The other highlight was the FOOD! Every day Professor Lily and the local guides would select a local restaurant for a banquet meal that showcased the best of local cooking and ingredients.

It was a great experience trying so many different foods and Lily made sure that there was always ample food and that the traditional local dishes were provided. Fortunately to counter all the eating, we would start the day with an hour of Tai Chi usually in lovely outdoor settings, often providing some amusement for locals passing by.

Every day there was something new to see, do and talk about and that makes for a great trip filled with memories. Professor Lily did a magnificent job of organising everything and everyone and she was ably assisted by the team leaders who by the end of the trip had mastered “herding cats”! It was wonderful getting to know others in the group and sharing such a memorable experience that gave us a glimpse of China rarely travelled by western tourists.

Acknowledgement
Grateful thanks to Vicky for her excellent description of experiences in Yunnan with Wulong and Professor Lily. Our students were very privaleged to have the opportunity to join a bespoke tour organised by Professor Lily who is a keen traveller and loves to especially travel with Wulong students. Extra special thanks to students contributing their photos.

Performed by our Advanced Tai Chi students - Ann, Candice, Helen, Gordon, Ying Lee, Sara, Jordan, Roland and Noriko - this internationally recognised routine was developed by the Chinese Sports Committee in the 1980s. It combined movements from the Yang, Chen, Wu, and Sun styles into a single, elegant form. Taichi Push Hands and Yang 9 Duel - A Hands On Experience!

A powerful and skill-enhancing experience!

On 25 May 2025, Professor Lily welcomed students from across Greater Melbourne for our first special workshop for 2025 — a sold-out encore of our most popular event to date - Push Hands and Yang 9 Duel.

Professor Lily focused her teaching on the martial arts techniques of tai chi Push Hands (Tui Shou) and the Yang 9 Duel Routine, helping students to deepen their understanding of tai chi martial applications, increase coordination especially hand eye coordination, reaction and response time, and connect mind and body.

Push Hands: Feeling, Flow, and Foundation

Push Hands two-person training links theory to practical application. Participants explored the dynamic interaction between attack and defense, learning to sense transitions and respond with relaxed alertness.

As Professor Lily explained:

“Push hands is a powerful method for tai chi students to increase their understanding of the martial applications of tai chi.

You can get a new feeling for your tai chi practice. Really understand what it means for interaction with an opponent. Feeling and responding to the direction and strength of a partner's action brings greater alertness, concentration and mindfulness to your practice.

Continued practice of push hands has benefits for core strength, balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and energy circulation.”

Yang 9 Duel Routine: From Solo to Synergy

The Yang 9 Duel Routine brings new depth and vitality to the solo routine taught in class. Learning and practising push hands and the duel routine is an important opportunity for enhancing your tai chi practice.

Partner work introduces an opponent for improving martial application. For sensing and feeling an opponent’s. intention. For understanding the coordination, timing and suitable application needed to respond to an opponent’s actions.

As always, Professor Lily’s teaching emphasized correct technique, martial application, and personal growth. Her warm and generous instruction was supported by Candice and Kathy, whose demonstrations and assistance were invaluable throughout the day.

Professor Lily was impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of all participants. Photos and highlights from the workshop will be shared soon. Be sure to follow us on social media and check our website for updates on future events.

Please enjoy photos of the day.

Yang Style Tai Chi Fan Session 2 Wrap up

On 12 November 2023, Professor Lily Sun led a second exclusive workshop for tai chi enthusiasts to learn session 2 of the Yang Style Tai Chi Fan 28 routine.

Professor Lily delivered clear and comprehensive instructions on Session 2 movements and tai chi fan techniques. Participants immersed themselves in the foundational skills and techniques essential for mastering the subtlety, intricacy and pleasure of the latest and most popular modern fan routine.

Having trained extensively with the creator of the Yang Style Taichi Fan 28, Professor Yang Li, Professor Lily delivered rare insights and a enthralling learning experience.

Professor Lily’s knowledge of the routine and her renowned teaching expertise ensured a high standard of learning for participants. As always, students particularly enjoyed the explanations of subtle fan martial applications - not just simply the basic movements. Professor Lily explained how the fan can be used to startle or visually confuse an opponent, deflect or redirect attacks, and with a flick of the wrist the fan can collapse to strike, parry hits or block other weapons.

We practiced the circular and linear movements of the Tai Chi Fan 28 – open, close, strike, block, poke, sweep, or hook – combined with footwork, body rotation, and other techniques of this fluid and powerful martial art.

And the engaging and uplifting movement names such as “Rain dragon returns to the sea”, “Mighty ox tills the fields” and “Bee tricks the butterfly” inspired our positive enjoyment and assisted our memory of the movements.

Once again Professor Lily was very impressed by students excitement and excellent results achieved learning the techniques and movements of the second half of Tai Chi Fan 28.

"Training with the tai chi fan is good for your taichi foundation, energy flow, mental function (focus and concentration) physical coordination, flexibility, strength and balance." says Professor Lily

“The Tai Chi Fan 28 routine is very relaxing and promotes mindfulness during practice. And the routine movements are very good for your heart.”

Professor Lily is planning a review session for Yang Style Tai Chi Fan 28 for January 2024. Stay tuned for more information soon.

Tai Chi Fan - A mesmerising martial art

Thank you, Professor Lily! For teaching us the subtle and intricate ways of the Yang Style Tai Chi Fan 28.

With the sharp crack of opening and closing fans resounding in our ears, we practiced the circular and linear movements of the Tai Chi Fan 28 – strike, block, poke, sweep, or hook – combined with footwork, body rotation, and other techniques of this fluid and powerful martial art.

Professor Lily showed us how the tai chi fan can be used to startle or visually confuse an opponent, deflect or redirect attacks, and with a flick of the wrist the tai chi fan can collapse to parry hits or block other weapons.

Professor Lily was very impressed by our excitement and dedication to learning the techniques and movements of the first half of Tai Chi Fan 28, with the excellent results achieved, and our enthusiasm for more training.

“The Tai Chi Fan 28 routine is very relaxing! It requires focus and concentration, which ensures mindfulness during practice. And the routine movements are good for your heart. The slow and rhythmic movements can improve cardiovascular health and circulation.” says Professor Lily,

"Training with the tai chi fan improves your taichi foundation. Tai chi fan practice develops coordination, flexibility, strength, balance, and improves energy flow throughout the whole body."

As always, the focus of Professor Lily’s training included correct foundation and technique - the martial applications of each movement were revealed, not just simply the basic movements.

Professor Lily is very pleased with the outcome of the workshop, and is planning a follow-up Tai Chi Fan 28 workshop for November 2023. You can send an email to express your interest in attending to info@wulongtaichi.com.au
