Eleven weeks of Taiji (Taichi) Stick qigong notably enhanced sleep quality and reduced anxiety level in older individuals.
A new randomized controlled trial published in Frontiers in Psychology involved 35 participants aged 65. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and anxiety was assessed using the Zung Self‑Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Measurements were taken before and after the intervention.
This study is significant because it is the first randomized controlled trial to examine an equipment‑based Qigong form (Taiji Stick) for these health outcomes. The research revealed clear, measurable benefits for participants who practised Taiji Stick.
Improved Sleep Quality
After 11 weeks, the Taiji Stick group showed a significant decline in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score and improvements in key sleep components, including:
Subjective sleep quality (P < 0.05)
Sleep disturbances (P < 0.01)
Use of sleeping medication (P < 0.01)
Daytime dysfunction (P < 0.05)
Reduced Anxiety Levels
Participants in the Taiji Stick group experienced a significant reduction in anxiety.
The implications
Taiji Stick shares the same roots as Baduanjin, Wuqinxi, and traditional Tai Chi, meaning these benefits likely extend across many forms of Qigong and Tai Chi practised at Wulong
This research reinforces what many Wulong students already feel in their practice: gentle, mindful movement has powerful effects on wellbeing. For students of all ages:
Better sleep supports recovery, mood, and overall vitality.
Lower anxiety helps you stay calm, centred, and emotionally balanced.
Regular practice builds resilience—physically, mentally, and socially.
Group training enhances connection and reduces loneliness, a key factor in emotional health.
For older adults in particular, the study highlights that Tai Chi and Qigong are safe, low‑impact, and highly effective tools for maintaining quality of life.
At Wulong, our classes already incorporate the same principles used in the study: slow, coordinated movement, breath awareness, and mindful focus. Whether you practise Tai Chi, Qigong, or Taiji Stick, you are engaging in a tradition that supports long‑term health and emotional wellbeing.
