When people imagine improving their health, they often picture gyms, treadmills, or intense routines. But growing research is revealing something beautifully simple: a slow, mindful, seated qigong — Shi Er Duan Jin — can meaningfully improve strength, mood, and recovery.
For Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu students, this may feel familiar. For newcomers, it’s a refreshing reminder that powerful change doesn’t always require force — sometimes it begins with conscious and gentle movement.
A recent scientific studies explores the benefits of Shi Er Duan Jin (also called the Twelve-Piece Brocade or sometimes the Sitting Ba Duan Jin) across different health conditions.
About the Research
Published 28 October 2025, this randomized controlled trial studied 123 older adults with osteoporosis who had recently undergone vertebroplasty - a minimally invasive procedure used to stabilise a fractured spinal bone. When osteoporosis weakens the vertebrae, they can collapse and cause severe pain. In vertebroplasty, doctors inject medical cement into the damaged bone to strengthen it. Recovery is usually quick, but gentle rehabilitation is essential — which is where Shi Er Duan Jin comes in.
Participants practiced Shi Er Duan Jin for six months, either with standard instruction or with additional support such as group meetings and guided practice.
Shi Er Duan Jin “demonstrated efficacy in enhancing self‑efficacy, psychophysical health, and bone health…”
Across both studies, the message was consistent - Shi Er Duan Jin is safe, accessible, and surprisingly effective — even for people who are frail, recovering, or living with chronic illness.
Tangible Benefits of Shi Er Duan Jin
1. Stronger muscles and better physical function
From hospital patients to older adults with osteoporosis, Shi Er Duan Jin improved muscle strength, mobility, and daily functioning — all through gentle, rhythmic, seated movements.
2. Improved bone health
The osteoporosis study showed increases in bone mineral density and healthier bone metabolism. Some participants even moved out of the osteoporosis range after six months.
3. Safe, accessible, and easy to learn
Adverse events were rare or nonexistent. Participants consistently described the seated routine as simple, calming, and suitable for their physical abilities.
What This Means for Wulong Students
At Wulong, we teach tai chi and qigong as living arts — practices that nourish the body, mind, and spirit. These studies reinforce what our community already experiences:
Gentle movement is powerful. You don’t need intensity to create change; you need consistency and mindful practice.
Shi Er Duan Jin is ideal for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply wanting to feel stronger and calmer, this seated routine is adaptable and safe.
Community support enhances results. The best outcomes in the osteoporosis study came from group guidance — just like the encouragement and connection found in Wulong classes.
Shi Er Duan Jin supports whole‑person wellbeing. Better mood, better confidence, better physical function — these are everyday benefits Wulong students feel, now backed by diverse scientific evidence.
Shi Er Duan Jin is more than a set of movements. It’s a doorway into good health.
