A Powerful Finale to Our Sword 32 Series

Our Tai Chi Sword 32 workshop brought Wulong’s two‑part sword program to a vibrant and inspiring close. Guided once again by Professor Lily Sun, Australia’s most highly accredited Tai Chi Sword teacher, workshop participants completed the full 32 movements of the routine and deepened their understanding of this elegant weapon.

A Day of Skill, Focus, and Transformation

Participants arrived with a mix of excitement and determination—some returning from the 2025 workshop, others stepping into sword practice for the first time. Professor Lily created the same inclusive, encouraging atmosphere that defined the first instalment, ensuring every participant felt supported as they refined foundational techniques and progressed into the full sequence.

Professor Lily’s teaching blended precision with warmth, breaking down each movement with clarity while emphasising the deeper principles of Tai Chi Sword: balance, intention, fluidity, and the interplay of softness and strength. Participants practised offensive and defensive applications, explored correct body alignment, and learned how to move with the sword as an extension of the body.

Building the Momentum

The workshop echoed the spirit of the October 2025 session, where students first encountered the foundation movements and the opening 16 movements. They were so inspired by Professor Lily’s mastery and generosity as a teacher. Many participants from that event returned, eager to complete the form and continue their journey with the sword.

Professor Lily once again praised the group’s dedication, noting the clear improvement in technique, confidence, and understanding.

“I am so proud of every student,” said Professor Lily Sun. “The 32‑Form is a beautiful routine, but it also asks for patience, focus, and a willingness to grow. You all demonstrated these qualities today. Your progress from last year is remarkable, and it makes me so happy to see your improved use of the sword and completion of the routine.”

Student Experience

The atmosphere throughout the day was one of focus, camaraderie, and joyful challenge. Participants reported feeling both stretched and supported, with many remarking on how the full 32‑movement sequence brought together strength, grace, and mental clarity.

Participants were grateful for this rare opportunity to train with a teacher of Professor Lily’s calibre, whose expertise in both performance and method elevates every session.

“I found it incredibly inspiring. I love tai chi ☺️💪☯️ Lily your technique is so technically amazing and fluid it is really incredible to watch. Thank you for your amazing teaching and support - I was so grateful to be part of the workshop.” Catherine H

A Milestone for Wulong

Completing the full 32‑Form Tai Chi Sword routine marks a significant achievement for our Wulong community. The two‑part workshop series has strengthened participants’ technical foundations, expanded their understanding of traditional weapon practice, and enriched Wulong’s culture of mindful, disciplined learning.

What’s Next

With growing interest and enthusiasm, Wulong looks forward to future taichi and qigong workshops and continued opportunities for students to uplift their skills under expert guidance.

Wulong Celebrates International Taijiquan Day at Our Tai Chi Sword 32 Workshop

Professor Lily Sun leads Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu students leaning the Taichi Sword 32 routine.

Today, Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu proudly marked a historic moment with our global tai chi community: the world’s first International Taijiquan Day, officially designated by UNESCO to be celebrated every year on 21 March.

Falling perfectly alongside our Tai Chi Sword 32 finale workshop with Professor Lily Sun, this year’s celebration brought together the search for personal improvement, community spirit, and the joy of deepening one’s practice.

A Global Celebration

UNESCO or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialised agency that works to promote peace, cultural understanding, education, science, and the protection of heritage sites around the world.

UNESCO’s proclamation of this special day recognises Taijiquan, or Tai Chi, as a practice that promotes balance, peace, harmonious coexistence, and mutual respect. It highlights tai chi’s role in supporting physical and mental wellbeing, fostering cultural exchange, and strengthening community connection worldwide.

Events across the globe—from Paris to Beijing to Melbourne—featured sword demonstrations, fan routines, and multi‑style performances, showcasing Taijiquan’s diversity and its reach across more than 180 countries.

Celebrating Through Wulong’s Sword 32 Finale Workshop

Here in Melbourne, our Wulong celebration took a uniquely meaningful form: the second and final instalment of our Tai Chi Sword 32 workshop, led by the internationally respected Professor Lily Sun, 8th Duan Professor of Wushu and Tai Chi from Wuhan University and National China Straight Sword Champion.

Students spent the afternoon:

  • Refining foundational sword techniques

  • Learning and completing the full 32‑movement straight sword routine

  • Experiencing the elegance, precision, and flowing power that define this classical form

  • Training in harmony with the spirit of International Taijiquan Day—connection, balance, and shared cultural appreciation

By training together today, our Wulong community joined millions around the world in honouring:

  • the history of Taijiquan

  • its benefits for body and mind

  • its role in connecting people across cultures and generations

Latest Research Shows In‑Person Tai Chi Delivers the Strongest Benefits

A new 2026 randomized controlled trial has confirmed what Wulong students feel every week: learning Tai Chi in person with a skilled instructor, makes a powerful difference.

The study, published in PLOS ONE, found that students who attended on‑site Tai Chi classes experienced the the highest participation rates (90%), and the largest reductions in anxiety and depression. Researchers noted that in‑person teaching allowed for real‑time technique correction, stronger engagement, and a more supportive learning environment — all key factors in improving mental wellbeing.

This research reinforces what Wulong students already experience:

  • Tai Chi calms the mind
The slow, coordinated movements help regulate the nervous system and reduce stress.

  • Tai Chi lifts mood
Regular practice supports emotional balance and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Tai Chi builds confidence
Improvements in self‑efficacy help students feel more capable in daily life.

  • Community matters
The strongest improvements came from guided, group‑based practice—a core part of Wulong’s teaching approach.

Whether you’re a university student, a working adult, or a senior, Tai Chi offers a gentle, sustainable way to support your mental wellbeing.

Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu in Yunnan: A Journey Through Paradise

A Traveller’s persective by Wulong Student Vicky H

Thirty four Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu students recently spent fourteen days travelling in the Yunnan Province in China. The tour organised by Professor Lily, provided an amazing insight into a diverse and beautiful part of China.

From the magnificent mountains in Tibet to the sub tropical south east Asian border, the Yunnan Province scenery was breathtaking, vast and home to a number of ethnic minority groups who continue to practise their cultural traditions. The trip had so many highlights including the Leaping Tiger Gorge, the Stone Forest, Lugo Lake, temples, historical towns as well as nightlife for those with energy at the end of the day.

The tour also used local guides when travelling and this gave us a great insight into local life and customs and even taught us a Chinese song to sing on the bus! The other highlight was the FOOD! Every day Professor Lily and the local guides would select a local restaurant for a banquet meal that showcased the best of local cooking and ingredients.

It was a great experience trying so many different foods and Lily made sure that there was always ample food and that the traditional local dishes were provided. Fortunately to counter all the eating, we would start the day with an hour of Tai Chi usually in lovely outdoor settings, often providing some amusement for locals passing by.

Every day there was something new to see, do and talk about and that makes for a great trip filled with memories. Professor Lily did a magnificent job of organising everything and everyone and she was ably assisted by the team leaders who by the end of the trip had mastered “herding cats”! It was wonderful getting to know others in the group and sharing such a memorable experience that gave us a glimpse of China rarely travelled by western tourists.

Acknowledgement
Grateful thanks to Vicky for her excellent description of experiences in Yunnan with Wulong and Professor Lily. Our students were very privaleged to have the opportunity to join a bespoke tour organised by Professor Lily who is a keen traveller and loves to especially travel with Wulong students. Extra special thanks to students contributing their photos.

Taichi 32 Sword - An Encounter with Power, Grace and Spirit

Wulong tai chi kung fu 32 Sword participants celebrate learning and understanding the taichi sword techniques

Learning the art of the sword

On 19 October 2025, students eagerly gathered for our much-anticipated 32 Sword Workshop. The day was a celebration of uplifting improvement through tai chi sword techniques and the 32 Sword form, bringing students energy and focus to the art of the sword.

Ranging from beginners looking to experience tai chi sword for the first time, to seasoned taichi sword practitioners refining their technique, students had come from across greater Melbourne and Victoria. Professor Lily Sun provided an inclusive atmosphere encouraging all participants to challenge themselves, regardless of experience level.

Led by a genuine master of the sword

Our first workshop on the 32-Form Tai Chi Sword was a wonderful success, and it was truly inspiring to see everyone immerse themselves in learning the basic sword techniques and the first 16 movements of the sequence. Students were inspired and grateful to receive instruction and guidance from Professor Lily, a former Chinese national champion, plus an international competition level coach and judge. With all her expertise on show, Professor Lily skilfully guided students through the principles, techniques and movements of the 32 Sword, breaking down each movement with clear instruction and practical demonstration.

Superior training techniques ensured correct foundation and technique as the practical applications of each movement were taught, not just simply the basic movements.

Professor Lily praised students for their dedication to improving their tai chi skills withher specialty weapon – taichi sword – in particular.

“The sword is my technical speciality, which I studied since I’m 6 years old. I am very proud to share my skills with Wulong and students of tai chi” she said, “For many of you, this was your first time handling a Tai Chi sword, and I know it wasn’t easy. The art of the sword may appear simple at first glance, but it demands both strength in the arms and flexibility in the wrists—a challenge that you all embraced with dedication and joy. Your progress as beginners has been remarkable, and the enthusiasm you brought to each session made the experience even more special.

”Remember, Tai Chi is not just about perfecting the movements—it’s about the journey, the mindfulness, and the connection between body and spirit. You’ve already taken such meaningful steps forward, and I have no doubt that you will continue to shine as we move into the next phase.”

Students’ were overwhelmingly positive

“Once the teaching started, I was totally absorbed by Laoshi Lily Sun” said Sara L. “Having absolute command of the sword, she walked us through each movement whilst explaining and demonstrating simultaneously. the patience and stamina exhibited for the next 4 hours left me in awe.”

Taichi Push Hands and Yang 9 Duel - A Hands On Experience!

A powerful and skill-enhancing experience!

On 25 May 2025, Professor Lily welcomed students from across Greater Melbourne for our first special workshop for 2025 — a sold-out encore of our most popular event to date - Push Hands and Yang 9 Duel.

Professor Lily focused her teaching on the martial arts techniques of tai chi Push Hands (Tui Shou) and the Yang 9 Duel Routine, helping students to deepen their understanding of tai chi martial applications, increase coordination especially hand eye coordination, reaction and response time, and connect mind and body.

Push Hands: Feeling, Flow, and Foundation

Push Hands two-person training links theory to practical application. Participants explored the dynamic interaction between attack and defense, learning to sense transitions and respond with relaxed alertness.

As Professor Lily explained:

“Push hands is a powerful method for tai chi students to increase their understanding of the martial applications of tai chi.

You can get a new feeling for your tai chi practice. Really understand what it means for interaction with an opponent. Feeling and responding to the direction and strength of a partner's action brings greater alertness, concentration and mindfulness to your practice.

Continued practice of push hands has benefits for core strength, balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and energy circulation.”

Yang 9 Duel Routine: From Solo to Synergy

The Yang 9 Duel Routine brings new depth and vitality to the solo routine taught in class. Learning and practising push hands and the duel routine is an important opportunity for enhancing your tai chi practice.

Partner work introduces an opponent for improving martial application. For sensing and feeling an opponent’s. intention. For understanding the coordination, timing and suitable application needed to respond to an opponent’s actions.

As always, Professor Lily’s teaching emphasized correct technique, martial application, and personal growth. Her warm and generous instruction was supported by Candice and Kathy, whose demonstrations and assistance were invaluable throughout the day.

Professor Lily was impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of all participants. Photos and highlights from the workshop will be shared soon. Be sure to follow us on social media and check our website for updates on future events.

Please enjoy photos of the day.

Push Hands - Our biggest Wulong Workshop ever!!!

Wow! What a powerful and skill enhancing experience! Wulong’s biggest workshop yet was fully booked almost immediately by participants from across Melbourne, regional Victoria, and interstate - one passionate student coming from as far as Western Australia to learn from Professor Lily.

Thank you Professor Lily! for teaching workshop particpants the martial arts techniques of tai chi Push Hands or tui zhou, and the corresponding Yang 9 Duel Routine.

Two-person push hands is a thought provoking training method practiced to raise tai chi students’ understanding of facing an opponent, and the interaction between attack and defence. Push hands helps us sense our partner’s movements and intention, the transition between attack and defence.

“Push hands is very important for tai chi students to increase their understanding of the martial applications of tai chi.” says Professor Lily,

"Push hands practice will improve your tai chi foundation and practice through increasing reflex, reaction, coordination, strength, and balance. Energy flows throughout the whole body, with benefits for cardiovascular health and circulation.”

Professor Lily also introduced chai zhao into the practical application of tai chi, bridging the gap between theory and practice, and improving combat skills. Chai zhao is the process of breaking down, analyzing, and training response techniques for specific movements. It involves specific offensive and defensive techniques, methods to neutralize our opponent’s force, change the angle of their attack, and pick the right timing for a counterattack.

These experiences created the foundation skills for the Yang 9 Duel routine. The integrated movements of the duel are an enlightening uplift of the solo routine learnt in class. Feeling and responding to the direction and strength of a partner's intention brings greater alertness, concentration and mindfulness to our practice. The Yang 9 Duel brought us a new beauty and flow as we practiced.

As always, Professor Lily’s training included correct foundation and technique - the martial applications of each movement were fully demonstrated, and errors corrected in the workshop. Special thanks to Candice and Helen for demonstrations and assistance.

Professor Lily was very impressed with our dedication and enthusiasm for more Push Hands and Duel routine training. So we are busy planning another push hands workshop for early 2025. Please follow our social media and website to keep up to date with the details as they are released.

Celebrating World Wushu Kung Fu Day 2024

Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu wushu and tai chi classes celebrate World Wushu Kun Fu Day at Ascot Vale , Melbourne, Australia

Today Wulong Tai Chi Kung Fu classes celebrated World Wushu Kung Fu Day 2024 with other enthusiasts around the globe. Professor Lily especially likes the 2024 theme “Wushu: Health and Happiness”. She says

“harmonising mind and body, maintaining physical and mental health, and feeling happy through learning, achieving and making friends make wushu a one-stop shop to a multitude of benefits.”

The benefits of wushu and taichi practice, increased athleticism, improved health, recovery from injuries and disease, more confidence, and strong community are no secret to wushu and taichi instructors and students.

Wushu, which is also referred to as Kung Fu, is an umbrella term for Chinese Martial arts composed of basic offensive and defensive movements executed with either bare-handed or with weapons. Taichi which falls under the wushu umbrella is a popular form of wushu and particularly suitable for people of all age groups and physical conditions.

World Wushu Kung Fu Day aims to raise global awareness of all practitioners, forms, and styles of wushu, both contemporary competition forms or traditional styles. It promotes the concepts of peace, friendship, health, and an appreciation for nature.

Taichi for post COVID recovery

The World Health Organization defines long COVID as the continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, with these symptoms lasting for at least 2 months without any other explanation. While common symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, and cognitive dysfunction, over 200 different symptoms have been reported that can impact everyday functions. Studies suggest that around 10–20% of people infected by SARS-CoV-2 may experience symptoms that qualify as long COVID.

Qigong practice is a recommended treatment for post-COVID short and long-term rehabilitation.

Wulong Tai Chi classes, designed by Professor Lily Sun (Melbourne’s most qualified tai chi practitioner and teacher), and based on traditional qigong principles and modern standards, provide the best qigong training available in Melbourne.

12 Steps to Harmonising Mind, Body and Energy

Dispel all thoughts in the deep night,

Concentrate the mind, Breathe slowly,

Let the body fly like a swallow in the clouds.

What a special way to start the learning! Hearing the commencing words of the 12 Step Health Preservation Qigong promoted the correct mindset to learn this exceptional qigong.

The 12 Step Qigong was a mental feast involving rich imagery such as ‘lotus flower opens on the water’, ‘golden rooster heralds the dawn’ and ‘rhinoceros gazing at the moon’. Professor Lily connected these images to the physical movements leaving a deep impression on mind and body.

In ancient times people discovered that mental concentration could actively help to regulate the body and mind, stabilise the organs, promote the balance of yin and yang, and lead to better physical and mental health. And we believe it too!

“The ancient people believed that too much emotion [anxiety] and melancholy [depression] lead to injury to the internal organs. They believed that cultivation of “spirit” [positive mindset, enjoyment of life] increases physical and mental health and prevents illness.” said Professor Lily.

“The 12 Step Qigong maintains spirit and body together. Each movements’ special design is to balance and calm the meridians especially for major organs - heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and stomach”

“I really encourage students to continue to practice this qigong and preserve health, strength and a calm mind.”

Calming the mind and meridian function in the body leads to increased energy flow, flexible joints and strong muscles, bones and ligaments, improving the body, preventing and treating illness, and prolonging life.

As always, the focus of Professor Lily’s training included correct foundation and technique - the specific details and tips of each movement were revealed and explained, not just simply the basic movements. Participants were quick to accept these details resulting in an outstanding learning experience for all.

Professor Lily was very pleased with the results of this special qigong workshop which was fully booked almost immediately by participants from across Melbourne and Victoria. Professor Lily is already busy planning our second 2024 Wulong workshop for November. Please follow our social media and website to keep up to date with the details as they are released.
